Sources informed CBS News that Robinson’s father recognized him from images released by authorities and confronted him.
According to reports, Robinson acknowledged to his father that he was the individual in the photos and admitted to killing Charlie Kirk. When his father urged him to turn himself in, Robinson allegedly expressed a preference to end his life instead. Concerned for his son’s safety, his father reached out to a family youth pastor.
The pastor, who also serves as a court security officer, accompanied Robinson’s father in trying to calm him and eventually notified the U.S.
Marshals Service, which detained Robinson at the scene. The FBI subsequently took him into custody late Thursday night, as confirmed by FBI Director Kash Patel.
Discussion about potential penalties in the case has begun. Utah Attorney General Derek Brown stated that no decision has been made regarding seeking the death penalty but emphasized that “everything is on the table” and that the matter is actively under review.
This case has garnered national attention, with former President Donald Trump expressing his hope that the suspected shooter receives the death penalty.
Governor Cox also indicated that Utah officials intend to pursue capital punishment. In the meantime, Robinson’s family’s online activity has changed recently, with a social media account thought to belong to his mother, Amber Jones Robinson, being deleted. Authorities have not disclosed the reason behind this removal.
It was previously reported that Robinson had been arrested as the prime suspect in the murder of 31-year-old political activist Kirk during a rally at Utah Valley University on September 10, 2025.
Insiders indicated that Robinson confessed to his father, Matt Robinson. The suspect’s father, who has 27 years of experience with the Washington County Sheriff’s Department and is a member of the U.S.
Marshals Service, managed to secure his son before contacting law enforcement. President Trump has reiterated his hopes that Robinson receives the death penalty if convicted.
A press conference was conducted the same evening of Tyler’s arrest, confirming that he would face capital punishment if found guilty.
Trump also mentioned that investigators located Robinson with the assistance of his father. He further mentioned a family member’s comment about Robinson becoming increasingly political in recent years. One relative recounted an incident during a family dinner where Tyler indicated that the political activist would be visiting Utah Valley University.
Kash Patel expressed gratitude to the president, the federal government, and the public for their support, commending law enforcement for their quick actions after the shooting and their efficient capturing of the suspect.
Patel stated, “In 33 hours, we have made historic progress for Charlie,” recognizing the arrest as a testament to effective law enforcement. He also mentioned that the FBI had received over 11,000 leads and was diligently pursuing each one. Reports indicate that Robinson resides in a $600,000, six-bedroom home in Washington, Utah, located approximately 260 miles south of where Kirk was killed in Orem.
A motive for the assassination remains uncertain as the investigation continues.
