“We’ll sort this out,” he promised, squeezing my hand.
“I should have told you.”
Back inside, the house felt different—both familiar and foreign, as if it had whispered secrets to strangers.
But for now, it was enough to know that our family was safe, and that tomorrow, with the first light of dawn, would bring a new understanding and maybe even a chance to reconcile the past with today’s reality.
As the officers left and we closed the door behind them, I realized that while I had hired someone to clean the house, it was I who had uncovered the dust of yesterday, swept up in the unexpected and the unknown.
