When Mark spots his wife Jess selling her engagement ring at a pawn shop, her shocking accusations leave him reeling.
But the truth he uncovers is even darker… a betrayal so calculated it shatters everything he believed about their marriage.
As his world crumbles, Mark must decide: rebuild or walk away?
Let me start by saying that I always thought my marriage to Jess was solid.
You know?
Not perfect, seriously, what relationship is? But we had our rhythm. Seven years in, I thought we’d seen the worst and made it through stronger.
But last Saturday proved just how wrong I was.
I was at the local pawn shop, picking up my vintage watch after a repair. It was my grandfather’s watch, and only the owner of the store knew how to repair such old objects.
Jess was out running errands, or so I thought, so I figured I’d squeeze this in before we met back home for our Saturday homemade pizza date.
The place was busier than usual, and while I stood at the counter, my eyes wandered.
That’s when I saw her.
Jess.
She was standing at the jewelry counter, her back to me, her hair up in that familiar messy bun she always wore on weekends. For a second, I thought I must be mistaken.
But no, it was definitely my wife.
My first thought was that maybe she was getting her engagement ring cleaned or resized. It would’ve been sweet if I wasn’t immediately struck by a sinking feeling in my gut.
Then I heard her say it.
“What’s the best price you can give me, Bob?” she asked.
I froze.
The engagement ring. The one I’d saved for months to buy, the one she cried over when I proposed, the one she promised to cherish forever.
She was selling it.
I didn’t realize I was walking toward her until I was practically behind her, while she stood at the counter.
“Jess?”
She spun around, her face pale.
Her wide eyes darted between me and the pawn shop employee, but she recovered quickly, crossing her arms like she was the one caught off guard.
“Why are you spying on me, Mark?” she snapped.
“I’m not spying!” I said, my voice unsteady. “I came here to pick something up, and I see you… selling your ring? Jess, what’s going on?”
Her expression hardened.
“What’s going on?
What’s going on is it’s all your fault, Mark! It’s because of you that I’m in this mess!”
“My fault?” I stared at her, stunned. “What are you talking about?”
