Just when I thought I had finally moved on and was ready to build a future with Ethan, a message from my ex turned everything upside down. Secrets I believed were long buried came back to haunt me, threatening to unravel everything. Could I protect my new happiness, or was it too late?
It was one of those rare moments when life felt like it was finally coming together.
Ethan was the man I had been searching for—steady, calm, everything my life needed after the whirlwind of my divorce.
We had planned a weekend together at his family’s lakeside house, just the two of us, and I couldn’t help but smile thinking about it.
But two days before, I got an invite to a small party from some old friends.
Why not? A quick catch-up, a little fun before the great weekend.
When I arrived, the atmosphere was easy.
Familiar faces and the hum of conversation filled the room. It was exactly what I needed.
For a brief moment, I let myself relax.
But then I saw him.
Luke.
The room seemed to freeze. I hadn’t seen him since the divorce, and yet there he was, moving toward me with that same confident stride.
“Kristan,” he said smoothly, his voice cutting through the chatter. “It’s been a while.”
He stepped closer.
“You look good.
Better than ever,” he added, his eyes sweeping over me like he was assessing something he once owned.
I felt my skin prickle under his gaze.
“You know,” Luke continued, leaning in slightly, “I’ve been thinking about you lately.
Remember that trip we took to the mountains? God, you were so happy then.”
I stiffened, not wanting to go down memory lane with him.
He smiled.
“Not that long. Feels like just yesterday, doesn’t it?”
“No,” I said, more firmly this time.
“I’ve moved on.
I’m with someone else now.”
“Someone serious?”
“Yes. Ethan.”
Luke’s smile widened just slightly, his eyes dark with something I couldn’t place. He leaned in closer, his voice dropping to a whisper.
“Kristan, the past isn’t the past until the moments that tie us together are gone.
And I don’t think they are…
yet.”
I felt a chill run down my spine. His words lingered, wrapping around me like a shadow I couldn’t escape.
He took a step back, his eyes still locked on mine.
With that, he turned and walked away, leaving me standing there, frozen.
I had thought I had left my past behind, but at that moment, I knew it wasn’t finished with me.
