I Was in a Diabetic Coma for Three Days and Heard Everything – Then My Husband Took a Call Beside My Bed

While I lay unconscious in the ICU, my husband talked to me like I could hear him. Most of what he said was ordinary and comforting. Then his phone rang, his voice changed, and I heard something I couldn’t forget once I woke up.

I was unconscious for three days, but I wasn’t completely gone.

That’s the part nobody really understood when I finally woke up.

I have type 1 diabetes. I’ve had it since I was 12, and for most of my adult life, I’ve managed it pretty well.

Then, earlier this year, I got sick.

At first I thought it was a stomach bug.

I couldn’t keep food down, my blood sugar kept climbing, and I was exhausted in a way that didn’t feel normal.

My husband, Daniel, wanted to take me to urgent care that evening, but I told him I’d be fine after some sleep.

I don’t remember much after that.

Apparently, sometime during the night, I became confused and started breathing strangely.

Daniel called 911.

By the time I got to the hospital, I was in severe diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA).

The next thing I clearly remember is waking up in the ICU three days later.

But there was something in between.

Voices.

At first, I thought I had dreamed all of it.

I remember nurses talking over me.

One woman said my potassium was improving. Someone else asked whether my husband had gone home yet.

I heard the blood pressure cuff inflate over and over.

I heard Daniel talking to my mother on speakerphone.

“She’s stable,” he told her. “They said we just have to wait.”

I wanted to open my eyes.

I couldn’t.

I wanted to tell them I could hear them.
