My daughter-in-law laughed when she gave me a $2 scratch-off for my 73rd birthday. 10 months later, my own son shoved a senior living brochure in front of me and said, “We already picked your room.” They thought I was too old to fight back. They had no idea what I had been hiding.

My daughter-in-law gave me a two-dollar scratch-off ticket for my seventy-third birthday and laughed while I scratched it. Jessica laughed again.

“You shouldn’t be living alone, Mom.”

I believed him.

Over time, I stopped feeling like a guest and became useful. I cooked because Jessica came home late from her law firm. Then I cleaned because I had cooked. I bought groceries, folded laundry, picked up the kids, and changed my plans whenever someone needed something.
