The first thing I noticed was my nine-year-old daughter’s trembling lips as she struggled not to cry. The second was my father’s black SUV passing us on the snowy road, its heated interior filled with laughter from my brother’s children.

I went completely still.
“And what did Grandpa do?”
Her voice became barely audible.
“He told me to remember my place.”
For several seconds, I couldn’t speak.
My father had deliberately left my little girl to walk through freezing weather while driving my brother’s two sons in a warm vehicle.
And he’d done it to teach her some twisted lesson about her position in the family.
