My husband returned from a business trip with a wedding ring in his wallet. He claimed it was a surprise gift for me, but the engraved initials weren’t mine. Then I noticed two ring marks on his hand. What had he really been doing in Chicago?
My husband had been home from Chicago for less than 20 minutes when I found a wedding ring in his wallet.
It wasn’t mine.

As I moved it aside, a small gold ring slipped out.
The band held a tiny diamond. Inside were two engraved initials.
J & E.

“Whose wedding ring is this?” I asked.

For a moment, he looked genuinely frightened.
“Yours, obviously.”
I raised my left hand.
“I’m wearing mine.”
He laughed nervously.
“I bought you a replacement. I wanted to surprise you.”
“Why would you replace my wedding ring?”
“I thought you might like something different.”
“Then why does it say J and E?”
He reached toward me.
“Let me see.”
I pulled my hand away.
“Who’s E?”
“Sarah, you’re making something out of nothing.”
As he reached again, I noticed two pale marks on his left hand. One was under his usual wedding band. Another circled the finger next to his ring finger.
“Why do you have two ring marks?”
