A Man Cut in Front of Me at Airport Security and Called His Friend to Brag – He Didn’t Know We Were on the Same Flight Home

I thought one rude stranger cutting in front of me at airport security was too minor to fight over. Then he started bragging about it loudly because he thought I didn’t understand English. By the time we reached the gate, I knew our paths weren’t finished crossing.

I flew to Spain on my own last week.

I left my husband, Mark, and our two kids at home in the States for nine days so I could visit my parents.

My dad is Spanish. My mom is American.

They moved back to Spain years ago, and I hadn’t seen them in two years.

No snacks stuffed into every pocket.

No tiny jacket I’m somehow responsible for, even though it belongs to someone else.

No one asking when we’re boarding every six minutes.

For the first day, I kept checking behind me in airports and train stations because my brain was convinced I had misplaced a child.

The visit itself was wonderful.

My dad complained that I was too thin and then fed me continuously for nine days.

I slept later than seven in the morning for the first time since I became a parent.

By the end, though, I was ready to see my husband and kids again.

My dad had already planned to fly back with me.

He was going to stay with us for three weeks.

According to him, Mark also needed someone to teach him how to grill properly.

Mark does not agree with this assessment.

So on the morning we left, Dad and I arrived at the airport earlier than necessary.

We left home early because my father believes missing a flight is a moral failure.

We checked our bags and got coffee.
