Julian’s smartwatch was meant for emergencies, not a meeting where a wealthy PTA president demanded my 10-year-old be expelled. I knew its recording could prove my son hadn’t touched her daughter. “Hello, is this Julian’s mother? This is Principal Davis from Oakridge Academy.”
I wedged my phone between my shoulder and ear while stacking clean cups behind the diner counter.
“Is Julian okay?”
“He’s fine. There’s been an incident involving another student.”
I put the cups down.
“Julian has been accused of pushing a girl during recess. We’re considering a suspension.”
My son was ten. He built model airplanes, apologized when other people bumped into him, and once spent twenty minutes rescuing a moth from our bathroom.
“Have you spoken to him?” I asked.

“I think it would be best if you came in.”
