Sometimes she would quietly walk over, put her paw on their chest or stomach — as if she were trying to suffocate them. The woman was completely frightened.
She insisted that they return the dog to the shelter.
— She’s not aggressive, but this isn’t normal, — she told the shelter worker. — What happened?
Did she bite someone?
— No… she just behaves strangely.
She sits at night, watching us, like she wants to hurt us.
The shelter worker froze for a moment, then sighed deeply:
— Oh, God… poor animal. You probably didn’t know. Her previous owner was an elderly man, around eighty years old.
He died one night in his sleep.
The dog woke up beside him and didn’t leave his side until the neighbors arrived…
Silence filled the room.
— Now she’s probably just afraid of losing someone she loves again.
She watches to make sure you’re breathing, that everything is okay. She’s protecting you.
The woman began to cry, and the man lowered his head to hide his tears.
They hugged the dog and went home — the three of them together. Since then, she still sits beside them at night, but now the couple looks at her with warmth and gratitude.
