I welcomed my daughter’s hungry classmate into our home without thinking twice. Before the night was over, I realized the real mystery wasn’t why he’d come – but why he felt familiar.
It was dark. Emma’s club had ended forty minutes earlier.
She wasn’t answering my calls. I was about to go looking for her when the front door suddenly opened.
“Where have you been? I was so worried…”
I stopped when I saw the boy standing behind her. He looked about her age.
I was about to go looking for her.
“Mom, this is Noah. He hasn’t eaten,” she explained.
“What do you mean?”
“We go to English class together,” Emma continued. “I’ve been giving him part of my lunch all week. Today, he asked if I had anything else.”
“All week? Emma, why didn’t you tell me?”
“You said we shouldn’t leave people when they need help. And Noah needed my help.”
He hasn’t eaten.
The boy backed toward the door. “Sorry, ma’am. I can go.”
“No, honey. Come in. But your family must be worried. Where do you live?” I asked gently.
He looked down. “My mom died.”
“What about your dad?”
“I hardly ever see him. I live with my aunt.” Noah looked down at his hands. “He says I’m her problem.”
Noah needed my help.
I served them soup, mac and cheese, and homemade cake.
Noah finished the soup before Emma had taken three bites.
“Do you want more?”
He hesitated. “Is there enough?”
The question caught me off guard. “There’s plenty.”
He says I’m her problem.
“Can I have some for later?”
