My Boyfriend Called Me ‘Materialistic’ Because I Cried over the $10 Engagement Ring – When I Discovered Who Had Received the Real Diamond Ring, I Took Matters Into My Own Hands

My boyfriend proposed after nine years with a $9.99 ring. Less than 24 hours later, I found the diamond he’d promised me… on another woman’s hand.

The rent statement sat on the counter with my name at the top and Aaron’s truck payment logged under my card again, the third month in a row. I turned it face down and lit the good candles Megan had given me for Christmas.

“It’s our anniversary.”

Nine years with Aaron deserved the good candles, I decided. I even ironed the tablecloth, and the kitchen smelled like the lasagna I had spent two hours making.

Aaron came in from the living room and dropped onto a chair without looking up from his phone.

“Smells all right.”

“It’s your favorite,” I said. “I left work early.”

“You didn’t have to do all this.”

“He said he has a surprise.”

I set the plates down and tried to catch his eye. “It’s our anniversary. Of course I did.”

He shrugged and reached for the wine I had poured him.

“How’s the business?” I asked, softer.

“Getting there. Another few months and we’re golden.”

I had heard that line for six years. I still smiled.

Megan had been quietly waiting for me to leave Aaron.

My phone buzzed. Megan, of course.

“Tell me he’s actually doing something tonight🙄”

I typed back, “He said he has a surprise.”

“Claire. Please🤦‍♀️”

I locked the screen. Megan had been quietly waiting for me to leave Aaron since somewhere around year four. I loved her for caring. I hated her for being right so often.

“She’s family.”

“Is Emma coming to dinner Sunday?” I asked Aaron, just to fill the quiet.

“Yeah. She said she has news.”

“She always has news.”

Aaron glanced up sharply. “Don’t start.”

“I’m not starting. I like Emma.”

Something in his voice shifted.

And I did, mostly. For years, Aaron insisted he was an only child and that losing both parents had left him with no family at all. Then, four years earlier, Emma suddenly appeared. He said she’d spent years in Thailand after a family feud he refused to explain. Before that, he’d never once mentioned her.

She slipped so easily into our lives — bringing wine, stories, and a smile — that eventually I stopped asking questions.

“She’s family,” I said.

“She is.” He set his phone down. “Speaking of family.”
