My husband was determined to teach our sensitive eight-year-old that “men don’t cry.” Then one mistake turned our house upside down – and Ryan’s favorite lesson came back to him in a way he never expected.
My eight-year-old son, Oscar, had always been a gentle, sensitive little boy.
If he got hurt or upset at school, he’d cry and come to me.
But my husband, Ryan, saw things differently.
Whenever Oscar cried, Ryan’s response was always the same. “Men don’t cry. Toughen up.”
Oscar, had always been a sensitive boy.
“Ryan, he’s eight.”
“And you’re making him soft.”
“I’m letting him talk about what he’s feeling.”
“He needs to learn what it means to be a man.”
“And crying stops him from being one?”
Men don’t cry. Toughen up.
Ryan shook his head. “You know what I mean.”
I did. I just hated what it was doing to Oscar.
Soon, when I asked what was wrong, his answer was always the same.
“Nothing.”
Ryan was proud. “See? He’s finally toughening up.”
He needs to learn what it means to be a man.
“He’s shutting us out.”
“I’m raising a man, not a crybaby.”
“He’s not getting stronger, Ryan. He’s learning to hide from us.”
What I didn’t know then was that Oscar wasn’t the only person in our house getting good at hiding things.
Ryan brushed me off.
He’s finally toughening up.
I should’ve pushed harder.
Too often, I let it go because I was tired of every disagreement about Oscar becoming a fight.
A few days before everything blew up, Ryan invited several friends and neighbors over.
He’d recently finished building an expensive scale model of a vintage sports car, and naturally, it ended up in the middle of the living room.
What happened next changed everything… FULL STORY on the next page.
