One woman carried a casserole dish. Another had a potted fern. A third held what looked like a framed Bible verse. Behind them, the moving truck idled in my driveway like the soundtrack to a hostage situation.
I stood in my half-unpacked kitchen wearing sweatpants and an old army T-shirt while my brain started doing math at combat speed.
The house had closed three days earlier. I had given the address to exactly four people: my realtor, my loan officer, Captain Henderson, and my mother.
That last one was clearly a tactical mistake.
I reached the front door before anyone could start unloading. When I opened it, Valerie spread her arms dramatically.
“There she is,” she announced.
The five women smiled expectantly.
“Mom,” I said carefully. “Why is there a moving truck in my driveway?”
Valerie laughed like I’d made a cute joke.
“Oh, Riley, don’t start with that serious face already. We’re celebrating.”
One of the church women handed me the casserole before I could refuse.
“Your mother has been talking non-stop about this beautiful home,” she said. “You’re such a blessing to her.”
That sentence hit like a warning shot.
Not your new home.
A blessing to her.
I looked toward the truck. Two movers were already lowering the ramp.
Mom noticed and waved casually.
“Well, we didn’t want to waste daylight,” she said. “The master suite furniture is very heavy.”
I blinked.
“The what?”
Valerie smiled wider.
“The master sweet, sweetheart, for my retirement. Honestly, I still can’t believe how generous you’re being.”
