He tried again, harder. He jiggled the key the way his father used to when the door swelled in the summer heat. He checked the key and reinserted it.

Their cruise-laden SUV stood in its usual spot beneath the old maple. Their son, Owen, was asleep in the back seat with his cheek pressed against the window. Their daughter, Sophie, was already out of the car, hopping from foot to foot on the gravel, asking if she could go swim.
Patrick took out his phone and called me.
