I looked exactly like what they’d decided I was: a working-class woman who’d been graciously included in a world she didn’t belong to. Marlene sat at the center of the table like someone holding court.

Her parents flanked her — Gerald and Patricia Ashford, who had made their money in real estate and carried their opinions about the right sort of people the way other people carry reading glasses, producing them frequently and without apology.
