My daughter called crying that she needed emergency heart surgery. I drove four hours to reach her, but when I arrived, her face was covered in bandages. Then I spoke with her doctor, and his reaction made me question everything.
“Mom, there’s something wrong with my heart. The doctors say I need surgery immediately. Please, I’m scared.”
My 21-year-old daughter, Emily, was sobbing so hard I could barely understand her.
She was studying four hours away and had been feeling sick for weeks.
Now she was calling from a private clinic near campus, saying she needed a $24,000 operation.
I grabbed my keys and drove straight there.
But when I entered her recovery room, I stopped in the doorway.
Emily was lying in bed with thick bandages covering much of her face.
“Oh my God, honey! What happened to your face?”
“Mom, please. I’m in so much pain,” she whispered. “The doctors said my skin reacted badly to something during surgery. That’s why they had to bandage it.”
“Are you sure you’re okay? What about your heart?”
“The operation went fine, Mom. Please, I just want to sleep.”
She closed her eyes, then added, “Can you go downstairs and pay for the balance? They said everything needs to be settled today.”
I still had questions, but I didn’t want to upset her.
Downstairs, I asked to speak with her surgeon before paying.
When he heard I was Emily’s mother, he smiled.
“Oh, you’re Emily’s mother! I’m glad you’re here. And I must say, it was very brave of your family to agree to this.”
I frowned.
“Agree to what, Doctor?”
His smile faded.
