For thirty-nine years, I believed the worst thing that had ever happened to me was losing my baby in a hospital room. Then, one rainy evening, a stranger walked into my barbershop and asked me to shave off the beard he’d been growing for seven years.
I was twenty-one when the life I thought I was going to have ended in a hospital room.
At the time, I was married to Richard.
He was handsome, polished, and from a family obsessed with what a proper family should look like. His mother turned private decisions into family matters, and Richard rarely challenged her.
When I got pregnant, he talked constantly about our child carrying his last name.
“My father will finally stop asking when we’re giving him a grandchild,” he joked once.
I laughed.
Back then, I thought it was harmless.
The delivery was not.
I remember bright lights, people moving fast, Richard shouting my name, and a nurse telling me to stay awake.
Somewhere through the noise, I heard someone say the baby was breathing. Then another voice said he needed to be transferred.
Then nothing.
When I woke, Richard was sitting beside me.
I asked one question.
“Where’s the baby?”
His face changed.
“They transferred him to another hospital. He didn’t make it.”
I stared at him.
“I’m sorry.”
“I want to see him.”
Richard shook his head.
“My mother is handling everything. You nearly died. She didn’t want you dealing with this too.”
I started crying so hard a nurse came in.
I kept asking where they had taken my son.
Richard kept saying it was too late.
The nurse could only confirm what I already half remembered: my baby had been born alive and transferred to a larger hospital with a neonatal unit. She hadn’t been there when Richard supposedly learned he had died.
