We role-played those difficult conversations. I helped her find the script to say, “I love being a part of this family, but I am a student first, and I cannot be a caregiver at 2 AM.” It was the hardest thing I’ve ever done—letting her fight her own battle while I stood in the background, ready to catch her, but refusing to push her.
I’m still learning. Rebuilding trust isn’t about being right; it’s about being present. I’ve realized that the greatest gift I can give her isn’t my interference, but the tools to find her own voice. And for the first time, she’s not just surviving her father’s house; she’s defining it.
